Posted in Events on June 20th, 2009 by Andy – Comments Off

Saturday 27th June, 12 – 4pm, Great Ashby Community Centre

The Great Ashby Fun Day is back! And it’s promising to be better than ever before!

As in previous years, we are pleased to say that all activities for the kids are FREE! This year we have a bouncy castle with slide, a Gladiator Joust for kids and adults alike, the always popular face painting, music entertainment from the Music Train’s Terrie and mini golf.

We will be entertained by the Baldock Midnight Morris, who are bound to get us joining in, performances by local groups and a display by the North Herts Sparklets who will wow us with their majorette routines.

There will be delicious HOME MADE cakes for sale in the Small Hall and a tasty barbecue, with the meat from a local butcher.

On a local theme, this year the Main Hall is dedicated to Local Arts, Crafts and Produce. Come along and see the stalls selling a variety of locally produced items including beautiful arts and crafts, cheeses from Hitchin’s Wobbly Bottom Farm and honey from the North Herts Beekeepers.

Join us for what promises to be another truly FUN DAY!

The theme for the 2008 Great Ashby Fun Day was the Great British Seaside.

Although we couldn’t quite promise the smell of salt in the air and the squawking of real seagulls overhead, we brought a taste of the seaside to Great Ashby.

We had Professor Squirty Wirty (between 2 and 4pm) as well as a bouncy castle, ball pool, face painting and making sand pictures to name but a few of the many FREE activities on offer.

Back by popular demand was Peter Leadbeater, the amazing chainsaw artist, who donated one of his sculptures as a raffle prize.

In the main hall there were lots of stalls to browse and once again the Great Ashby Community Church served us all drinks and their delicious home made cakes in the small hall. There was the ever popular barbecue selling delicious burgers and hotdogs and of course, the seaside staple – ICE CREAM!

Prizes for raffle included an Optima luxury wicker picnic basket and rug, a chainsaw sculpture made on the day, a 10ft quick-up pool, a Dumb Blondes? Hair and Beauty Gift Voucher and a Cream Tea for Two at Van Hages.

We all had a great time and hope you did too. See you at the 2009 Fun Day!

Saturday 30th June saw the 2007 Great Ashby Fun Day. Despite a few showers of rain, Great Ashby had a fun packed Circus themed afternoon.

The children had great fun learning new circus skills, playing on the bouncy castle and water tag whilst Peter Leadbeater, the skilled chainsaw artist wowed the adults with his skills. Everyone enjoyed the Baldock Midnight Morris dancers and the always popular refreshments by the Great Ashby Community Church were a welcome treat.

Great Ashby Fun Day

Great Ashby certainly came alive at the Fun Day. We were so lucky with the weather too.

As promised there was something for all the family to enjoy from the ever popular bouncy slide to the most delicious Bar-B-Q. Live music certainly helped create a party atmosphere. every bit of space in and around the Community Centre was buzzing with activity, the whole area was blaze of red, white and blue and the special balloon sculptures were fantastic.

The cheerleaders looked a picture in their stunning red, white and blue costumes and the Karate display was another occasion to see our young people in action.

The Mini Olympics was one of the highlights of the afternoon where about 40 children took part in various sporting activities and they looked great and had a really good time, They all came away with a Gold Medal and Certificate.

The Police and Fire Safety Officers were on hand to give useful and valuable advice.

All the stalls inside were kept busy and of course the wonderful refreshments were most welcome.

Our special visitors – Oliver Heald MP, Barabara Follet MP, Lyndha Needham and Tony Hunter to name but a few – certainly went away happy and were in no doubt that Great Ashby is certainly becoming a real community.

It is virtually impossible to name everyone who was involved in staging the Fun Day to thank them, but we do thank all our sponsors and band of helpers very much indeed. A big thank you must go to all the residents of Great Ashby for coming along and joining in the fun – without you there it would have been no fun at all.
